Getting Prepared

  • The best advice is to start planning and packing early!!

  • Begin cleaning out closets, the attic, the basement, and garage when you make the decision to move. Do not over pack boxes. Use as many boxes as you need to create easy-to-lift loads. Keep your largest boxes to no more than 25 pounds.

  • Repurpose household items for packing. Use hampers, suitcases, laundry baskets for storing/packing some of your clothes and household items.

  • Do not move what you will not use in your next home. In other words, now is a great time to pass family treasures on to your children, donate, and dispose of the things you no longer need, or want.

  • Make your reservations for Movers 2-4 weeks before your move day. When you call, be sure to ask Movers if they are Insured and State Licensed.

  • Submit your change of address form to the Post Office about a week before your move date.

  • Cancel or change your address for newspapers, magazines, pest control, house keepers, lawn and landscaping, maintenance 1-2 weeks before you move.

  • Schedule disconnect times for cable, phone, and utilities about a week before your move day, and then make sure utilities in your new home will be turned on by the time you move in!
